Picture day, it's picture day...it's time to get your picture made :) SMILE!

Today is picture day at TCCHS which means each and every one of the English classes will be interrupted by photo opportunities. However, we are still doing work in class.

1st period- Finished their questions (FINALLY) over Two Kinds. These were questions 2-7 on page 107. They also copied down a paragraph and identified imagery by underlining the words creating the imagery.

Then they corrected some non-standard English sentences.

2nd period was WILD today. Not only did they have to be told to sit down repeatedly, they thought picture day was a free day. SO...they have homework. :) They copied down the paragraph over imagery and identified the imagery words too. They also corrected the non-standard English sentences then they began reading silently The First Seven Years. They are to complete this assignment for homework and there will be a reading check quiz tomorrow over this material.

3rd period, 6th period, 7th period: Also began by identifying the imagery and correcting the non-standard English sentences.

3rd period and 6th period continued reading The First Seven Years outloud that we'd begun yesterday. 7th began reading it for the first time today. I reminded ALL classes that they have a vocabulary quiz coming up on Friday! Study HARD!!!

Terrific Tuesday

Today in class we are reviewing the rules that we heard during the assembly yesterday.
  •  Each student is writing down 5 rules.
  • Then, we are doing a vocabulary review.
  • After we finish this, we are STILL completing the chart from Two Kinds, the questions over Two Kinds and beginning defining allusion.
*****Only 1st period has any more time on the questions over Two Kinds, all other periods should have already turned these in.****

Third Period, Sixth Period, and Seventh Period began reading the First Seven Years.

Tomorrow is PICTURE DAY!!!

Manic Monday

Today we had an assembly first period. All we accomplished in class 1st period was to copy down this week's vocabulary words.

For all the other classes these are the things we did:
  • We copied down vocabulary words and definitions.
  • Students defined respect in their own words and gave 3 examples of what respect looked like. Then they wrote down what I could do as a teacher to earn their respect.
  • We completed a chart comparing the mother's perspective versus the daughter's on the following categories, school, competition, music lessons, television.
  • Then we answered questions 2-7 on the story Two Kinds.
  • Finally, we discussed allusion and began reading The First Seven Years.

Hot dog, it's FRIDAY!!!

Hot dog, hot dog, hot diggity dog...it's FRIDAY! It's also the day for our first vocabulary quiz. We continued with our journal writing. Today we wrote about our feelings concerning blind dates and even how we felt about people setting someone up for a marriage.

We continued to read Two Kinds from our text book and completed a graphic organizer on this story comparing the mother's feelings versus the daughter's feelings on 4 different issues. Then we answered questions from our book over the story Two Kinds.

Thursday....

We finished answering questions over Geraldo, No Last Name.
We wrote a journal about where we thought we would be in 5-10 years AND where other people saw us being.
We began reading Two Kinds from our text book.
We reviewed our vocabulary.
I reminded everyone to study for their quiz tomorrow.

The first couple of days of school

August 8th and 9th: We are getting to know each other and have had a great first couple of days. We've played the "Name Game" and have set goals for the school year, and shared what we did over the summer. We've discussed the change in procedures here at the high school, and  I've also assigned vocabulary words that will be quizzed over this Friday. Students were given a syllabus and the grading scale was reviewed. For regular students the grading scale is as follows:

40% Unit Tests, Major Projects, Major Essays
30% Unit Quizzes, Vocabulary Quizzes, Mini-Essays
20% Daily work, Homework
10% Benchmark

For the advanced students:

50% Unit Tests, Major Projects, and Major Essays
30% Vocabulary Quizzes, Unit Quizzes, Mini-Essays
10% Daily work, Homework
10% Benchmark

Students were reminded that late work will not be accepted unless it is a major project, test or essay. And that any late work accepted will be taken only one day late with a deduction of 10 points. No retests are given.
